A systematic review identified two RCTs showing that mindfulness based cognitive therapy conducted in a group setting (8 x 2-2.5 hour sessions) reduced relapse in chronic depression (three or more depressive episodes) by over 50% during a one-year follow-up period, compared to treatment as usual. There was no reduction in relapse for patients having experienced one or two episodes of depression.


Mindfulness based cognitive therapy in a group setting may be considered as a treatment option to reduce relapse in patients with depression who have had three or more episodes.
